Direct student loans and program had another program called the Federal Family Education Loan Program and which allowed certain private banks to originate federal loans with funds guaranteed by the federal government. The Federal Stafford loans are federal loans made to students to supplement a students financial resources. there are two types of stafford loans.

Subsidized
A subsidized student loan is based on financial need. There is no interest charged before repayment begins or during periods of deferment. The federal government “subsidizes” the interest while the student is still in school.

Unsubsidized
An unsubsidized loan is not awarded based on financial need and the interest charges start to accrued the moment the loan is disbursed and payments begin while the student is still in school unless the loan is deferred.
