The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program was created in 1993 in order to bring about more affordable lending solutions and financial aid for students in the United States. This program is part of the U.S. Department of Education and currently is the only place allowed to provideĀ federal student loans.
Direct student loans and program had another program called the Federal Family Education Loan Program and which allowed certain private banks to originate federal loans with funds guaranteed by the federal government. This was eliminated because of the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2010.

Subsidized
A subsidized student loan is based on financial need. There is no interest charged before repayment begins or during periods of deferment. The federal government “subsidizes” the interest while the student is still in school.
Unsubsidized
An unsubsidized loan is not awarded based on financial need and the interest charges start to accrued the moment the loan is disbursed and payments begin while the student is still in school unless the loan is deferred.
